Pina Colada

Piña Colada

The Piña Colada is not just a major staple here in Puerto Rico, It is the national drink. It was declared the official drink of Puerto Rico in 1978. Why might you ask did Puerto Rico make the Piña Colada the Islands official drink? That is because the Piña Colada was created in San Juan, Puerto Rico by a bartender working at the Caribe Hilton in 1954. Ramon Marrero “Monchito” first created this drink by mixing a fruity blend of rum, pineapple juice and coconut cream. The Piña Colada and the Caribe Hilton have gone hand in hand for over 65 years. In honor of their 50th anniversary The Caribe Hilton was presented with a proclamation signed by Puerto Rico’s Governor Sila Maria Calderon in 2004 which will forever credit the Caribe Hilton with the creation of the Piña Colada.
